Increasing Club Speed is Essential Part of Improving Your Golf Swing

By: Paul Iconia

Improving your golf swing is one of the most important factors in improving your game. Without a good swing, you are sunk before you start. Improving your golf swing begins and ends with you. The training of the muscles of your body to properly perform specific movements takes time and practice. Finding a good tool among the many golf aids available is critical in helping you determine what you need to do.

Teeing off endless buckets of balls at the golf range won't do it. Generally hitting more balls reinforces the bad habits you already developed and perfects an improper swing. It seems the more balls you hit the worse your swing and mood becomes.

Golf pros consider the three pillars (grip, stance and posture) as the essential ingredients necessary for a good swing. Experience level is of no consequence, if you are struggling with your golf swing, then you can bet something is wrong with your grip, stance or posture.

For example, by gripping the golf club less tightly and allowing for some flexibility in your grip, it creates more lag. Lag is the angle created by the club and your left hand (right hand in case you're left-handed) in your downswing.

Approaching the ball changes in differing situations. For example, if you are teeing off, in the fairway or in a sand trap, in most instances hitting the ball farther typically equals less par golf and an improved game overall. Nobody wants to come up short and see their ball end up in a hazard like the rough or sand trap each time they're on the course.

Distance is determined by the golf swing speed along with a few other mechanics involved in the swing such as balance and form. While not every golfer that hits the long ball is overly large, the impact they can place on the ball is huge. Club head speed is directly related to distance.

What prevents most golfers from increasing club speed during their swing? Many golfers grip the club too tightly, this rigidity translates into a stiffer swing that is restrictive and ultimately slower. Improper technique and swing order also slows club speed.

If you increase your club speed, then you increase the distance your ball travels. Age and skill level are not factors, boosting the power supplied by the body will increase swing speed. The power your body is capable of supplying can be significantly improved by performing specific exercises and learning proper form.

All pro golfers know the importance of proper swing technique that is required to realize optimal speed and trajectory of the golf ball. Proper swing is true for teeing off, pitching, chipping and even putting. Serious golfers will do whatever it takes to gain an extra 10 to 20 yards from their swing. The question remains, are they getting the distance they want? What are they doing to get it?
